ADA Access of Autonomous Vehicles – An Ongoing Discussion

Self-driving or “autonomous” vehicles are moving forward with technologies that stand to revolutionize the way we drive and move around in the U.S. and around the world.   The innovative engineering has the potential to expand the transportation capabilities to many people, including those with disabilities.  

In planning the design autonomous vehicles, it is important to include the the needs of disabled individuals making the vehicles accessible to everyone.

The discussion is an important one and this spring, the U.S. Access Board will host a four-part series of virtual meetings on making AVs accessible to passengers with disabilities.  According to the website: www.access-board.gov, “The Board will provide an open forum where members of the public and stakeholders can discuss considerations, challenges, and solutions in designing accessible AVs.”
